Study Reveals Why Women are Stopping Exercise

The largest global study by ASICS, on the gender exercise gap, revealed that more than half of women (54.5%) in the UK are dropping out of exercise or stopping completely. 

As we approach International Women's Day this Friday, Sudor Interactive stands with women everywhere, pushing for more physical activity and empowerment. Giving you a recap of this study, we reflect on the challenges and opportunities for women's participation in physical activity.

Despite the universal desire to be more active, many women face significant obstacles. Overwhelming commitments and time constraints are primary concerns, with other barriers including the cost of personal trainers and gym memberships, safety concerns, perceived lack of fitness, and limited access to equipment and spaces.

But when women do exercise regularly, the benefits are profound, with reported increases in happiness (52%), confidence (48%), and energy (50%), contrasting with heightened levels of stress (67%) and frustration (80%) when inactive.

To add to this data, 51% of women report decreasing or discontinuing exercise as they age, underscoring the persistent challenges faced by women at every stage of life. However, the study highlights a resilient spirit among women worldwide, with 65% engaging in running and 50% participating in strength training, including a notable 40% of older women lifting weights, traditionally seen as a male-dominated activity.

Beyond the numbers, the study highlights the factors that motivate women to embrace physical activity. Personal goals, technological support such as smart watches or apps, access to exercise spaces and equipment, and social support through friendships and teammates are key facilitators.
